who shops where I work. He’s really sweet. He loves to say hi and he’s always smiling. He talks in a really high pitched kind of babble and you can’t understand anything he’s saying but he always looks really happy to see you. He’s really bad at math though. Like really bad. You would think that maybe since language isn’t going to be his thing, he would work on his math skills.
He only ever buys one thing at a time. The total will be something like $2.45. I point to the screen so he sees the numbers. This is where he takes off his backpack, places it on the belt, goes into the side pocket, and takes out a film canister of change. He dumps all of it into his hand, counts out $2.20 and proudly hands over the change. I have to explain to him now that I need more money. He understands. He goes back to the change in his hand and now gives me a bunch more dimes and nickels. Now I have too much. I recount it all and hand back the extra money. He looks so happy to be getting change back.
Meanwhile the customers in line behind him look so incredulous. I don’t bother to explain that this is completely normal.
